In Mathematics at Dunottar we enable and encourage our pupils to recognise that mathematics permeates the world around us. We strive to help them appreciate its usefulness, power and beauty. As well as developing procedural fluency in mathematical techniques, our pupils develop their ability to use mathematics to analyse and solve problems both in lessons and in real-life. Patience and persistence are key skills that we look to develop, as well as the ability to think logically and critically, reflecting on their own work and the work of others.
iPads feature in most maths lessons. In Year 7 pupils use the Timestable Rockstars App to develop their speed of recall of these key facts, working independently and competitively in classroom ‘battles’. Pupils across all year groups use Hegarty Maths during lessons and for homework, accessing quizzes that test and challenge their knowledge and understanding.
Pupils in all year groups participate in the UKMT national individual Maths Challenges and pupils can train and compete in regional team maths challenges. In Year 8, a group of pupils is invited to attend a series of Saturday morning masterclasses run by the Royal Institution at Surrey University. As part of a whole school STEM initiative students from Year 7 & 8 have the opportunity to use their code breaking skills and creativity in a 3 day project; researching, building and live running an Escape Room.
