Sun, Sport and Team Spirit: Cricket Training Tour to Desert Springs

During the October half term, boys from Year 9 to Year 13 embarked on an unforgettable journey to Desert Springs in Spain for an exciting warm-weather training experience. Known for its world-class facilities, including Europe’s only year-round high-standard cricket complex and a championship golf course, Desert Springs offered our pupils the perfect environment to hone their skills and enjoy the camaraderie of team sport.

Day 1: Settling In and Team Building

The boys kicked off their tour with an intense morning session in the grass nets, working on batting, bowling and fielding techniques. Following training, they enjoyed some relaxation time on the paddle courts and by the pool, with a lively “Guess the Animal” game adding to the fun. The team even crossed paths with parents from Dunottar playing golf at the same complex.

Day 2: The First Match Challenge

On the second day, the team played the first of their three scheduled cricket matches – a challenging 50 over game. For many, this was their first experience playing in this format and they rose to the occasion with commendable teamwork and focus. In the field, they showcased strong fielding skills, bowling out the opposition for 197 runs. While our batsmen fell just short of the target, they demonstrated resilience and pushed the bowlers to nearly 40 overs to secure all the wickets – a true testament to their determination.

Day 3: T20, The Hundred and a Night to Remember

The third day brought two thrilling games, a T20 match followed by The Hundred format. Both games were closely contested, with the boys putting up an impressive fight against a well-experienced opposition. Although the results did not swing in our favour, the team’s growth was evident in their spirited play and adaptability. The evening concluded with a lively singing competition, with Captain, Max Wallis, taking home the top prize, ending the day on a high note.

Reflecting on the Experience

This tour offered our pupils not only valuable match experience but also an opportunity to bond, build resilience and learn from each game. Our enormous thanks to Ms. Wicking and Mr. Bier for their dedication and support throughout the trip, ensuring a memorable and enriching experience for everyone involved.
