Nicola Wintle, who is both a teacher at Dunottar and has two children at the school, commented: “We felt that it was important to invite those who would otherwise be spending Christmas day alone to join the Dunottar family for the event.”
The lunch, which was held at Dunottar School in Reigate, was attended by 78 senior citizens who are mainly associated with Age Concern, the Methodist Homes Association or the Woodhatch Centre.
Pupils from Dunottar School volunteered to pay £15 to sponsor a guest. The RG group, who are currently constructing the new Sainsbury’s in Redhill, donated gift bags of food and blankets. There were also donations from Tesco, Sainsbury, Waitrose, Morrisons and Office Gold Limited.
The whole school community was involved in the event. Love Dunottar PTA, teachers and friends provided transport and served tea and coffee to their visitors upon arrival. Pupils mingled with their guests, served food, chatted to them over lunch and provided a range of entertainment, from playing musical instruments to singing and dancing.
Head teacher, Rowena Cole said: “There was an amazing feeling of community with such a wide range of ages being together, swapping stories and enjoying the entertainment; I was delighted to receive feedback from some of our guests that this was one of the best Christmas lunch events they had attended. Thanks to all the organisers for the huge amount of time and energy it took to organise such a fantastic occasion.”
